Mellieha Fire Engulfs Campsite After Burning For Over 5 Hours - Three People Being Taken To Court 😡
The police will be taking court action against three people who were camping illegally at the site, where an extensive fire burned down a large chunk of grassland at l-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa early on Sunday. The fire was first reported at about 4 am. CPD arrived on-site shortly after where they were able to control the fire - but it was only fully put out at around 9 am. Upon arriving on the scene, police discovered 3 tents as well as a fire-pit (that was still burning), which is the suspected cause of the fire.
Police also found a mobile phone which they tracked to its owner, a 33-year-old man from Floriana, who had been camping at the site without a permit, along with a 29-year-old woman from Raħal Ġdid and a 29-year-old man from Ħal Safi.
Initial indications are that a large number of trees and bushes, as well as a substantial part of the natural habitat of the reserve, were destroyed in the fire.
Although investigations established that the fire started accidentally, the people decided to just leave the site when the fire spread. The three individuals are being taken to court & investigations are ongoing.
