Important Sections You Should Have In Your CV Before Applying For A Job 📄

Before applying for any job, you should always make sure that your CV is up-to-date & looking sharp.

Think of a CV as your calling card on paper to get your foot in the door & land your 1st interview with the company.

To help you create your perfect CV, here's some important sections that you need to include before applying for any job.

1. Contact Details 📞

Start with the basics. Make sure that you include full name, mobile number, email address, & sometimes even your home address.

It seems pretty obvious, which probably makes it the easiest to forget or update. If someone at the company prints your CV, they'll still be able to easily get in touch with you.

2. Key Skills 💪

This is a short-list of your top 4-6 key skills placed at the very start of your CV.

It's a quick summary of the best qualities that you have to offer as an employee.

The employer can skim through this list quickly & get an initial sense of who you are before even delving into the actual content of your CV.

3. Employment History 💼

This is where you list your previous work experience & any relevant tasks you would have completed as part of your role.

Only include job-related experiences & achievements if they are directly related to the position you’re applying for.

Also, include any skills you’ve obtained from previous work that fit into this new role.

4. Projects & Achievements 👸

Use this section to add any projects you've done or achievements you've accomplished that don't fall under education or work experience.

Employers like well-rounded individuals, so include things like sports, clubs, shows, skills, or certificates.

5. Education & Qualifications 🏫

List down details regarding your levels of education - primary, secondary, post-secondary, undergraduate, & post-graduate. Include the institutions, years you were studying, & the subjects or exams that you completed.

There's no need to list every single grade that you got. Employers won't care if you got an A or a C, as long as you passed & graduated.

6. Additional Training & Skills 🧠

If you completed any courses outside of the normal education, then list these here. These will increase your employability & help you stand out.

It also shows the employer that you value education & learning outside of the usual school parameters.

Tip: you should always want to learn & grow, both as an employee & as a human being.

7. Links To Previous Experience 🔍

This won't be applicable for all jobs & industries, but some vacancies might ask you to provide further evidence of previous work to show your skills.

Some people will link their websites or online portfolios, which will include examples of their personal projects or work-related creations for previous clients.

The proof is in the pudding, so it gives employers the chance to see the kind of work you create & check that it's up to the standard they require.

BONUS: Tips When Writing Your CV ✍️

Writing a good CV will take a bit of work but doing it properly will hopefully raise the chances of impressing the person reading it.

Even though there isn't one set way to write a CV, here are some final pointers you should keep in mind:

  • Your CV shouldn't be too long - aim for 2 pages max.

  • Opt for bullet points over paragraphs to make it easier to read.

  • Only include what is important without giving too much detail.

  • Use simple & direct statements that are easy to read & understand - avoid long words & complex language.

  • Proofread your CV properly before sending it out. Messy CVs with mistakes tend to end up in the trash.
