There's been a complete media storm about the Coronavirus, with outlets calling it the 'modern-day plague' along with other very exaggerated names - people seem very scared.

So, we're here to clear some things up for our worried Maltese students, Corona is truly not as dangerous as everyone has made it out to be, here's why...So, we're here to clear some things up for our worried Maltese students, Corona is truly not as dangerous as everyone has made it out to be, here's why...

1) It's Not As Deadly As You Might Think 😌

With regards to the initial diagnosis period, 14% of the total number of cases recover relatively immediately. So far, 86% of the 11,554 closed cases have fully recovered!

(see below)

*Closed cases = Either fully recovered or dead

*Total cases = Total diagnosed patients, whether recovered / still sick / dead

2) Almost All Diagnosed Cases Are In China 🇨🇳

In fact, these cases make up 98.87% of all patients - this means 68,509 of the total 69,289 cases are solely located in China.

For every 87.5 cases in China - there's just one case elsewhere.

Guangdong has the second-highest number of cases (1294), followed by Henan (1212), Zhejiang (1162), & Hunan (1001).

3) 8 / 29 Affected Countries Are Now Virus Free 😊

India (3), Russia (2), Spain (2), Belgium (1), Sri Lanka (1), Finland (1), Cambodia (1), and Nepal (1) are now clean.

Unfortunately - surrounding European countries aren't completely clean - with multiple confirmed cases in the UK & Germany, as well as 7 deaths in Italy 😔

4) But Don't Panic! - The Mortality Rate Is Just 2% ☠️

On February 4, 2020, the National Health Commission (NHC) of China announced that the current mortality rate (also known as case fatality rate or CFR) was just 2.1%.

This is calculated by taking the cumulative current total deaths divided by the current number of confirmed cases.

In comparison, CFR for other more serious diseases was 10% for SARS and 34% for MERS.

5) Deaths From People Under 60 Are Far Less Likely 👶

Approximately 80% of patients that passed away were over the age of 60 and 75% had pre-existing health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

So, if you're young and healthy it's highly unlikely that catching Corona will be fatal. In reality, this disease tends to only be fatal to the old, the weak, or the extremely young.
