6 Ways To Build The Perfect LinkedIn Profile, Grow Your Network & Land Interviews ✅
As part of FreeHour's Careers Month, we've been hard at work creating some super useful content for all of you looking to find your first proper job or career upgrade - as well as a new section on our app allowing you to submit CVs & even book interviews with local brands!
Looking To Master LinkedIn? 💼
Luckily, it's not as hard as you might think. There are a few key changes you need to make to your profile though, one's that'll instantly strengthen the way in which people perceive you...
1. Showcase Your Passion For Self-Improvement.
Believe it or not, LinkedIn offer free courses focused on teaching you invaluable skills to grow your CV. When you complete these courses, you get fancy certificates that you can have listed on your profile, allowing all potential employers to see your achievements.
LinkedIn Learning have thousands of courses available, and in every sector of work that you can imagine. Each class is broken into bite-sized chunks and they can be watched at any time on any device, online or offline.
So, whenever you find that you have some free time on your hands, be sure to invest in yourself and take some courses. You’ll thank yourself later.
2. Get A Professional Headshot.
Do not underestimate the power of a professionally taken photo.
A high-quality photo instantly lets people know that you mean business. Make sure you're dressed smart, almost like you're going for an interview, but also be sure to come across as friendly & approachable.
Pro-tip: You should also check your account settings, and make sure that your public profile is set to visible. This simple change will allow you to show up in searches.
3. Request A Recommendation.
Recommendations go a long, long way - especially in Malta. Think of it this way, how many times do you watch a movie without seeing the rating first? Or eating at a restaurant before browsing some reviews? These things matter.
Whether you have past employers, colleagues, favourite teachers or sports coaches - ask for help! A quick testimonial telling people that you're a person of character with a strong skillset will go a long way when people are browsing through your profile.
Make sure you stand out.
4. Create A Custom URL.
When you first join LinkedIn, you're given a long & impersonal profile link. A very quick way to change this, to add yet another layer of professionalism to your profile, is by creating a customized URL in the format of your name and surname.
After all, what would you prefer? Mark478f08y, or Mark-Riolo?
To do this, just click on your icon, click view profile and click "Edit public profile & URL" on the top right, then simply customize to your liking. Make sure it looks professional!
All of these little touches contribute to creating a much stronger personal brand.
5. Set A Stellar Headline.
Just like your profile photo, your headline is one of the very first things people see when visiting your profile. That means that you have to instantly make a statement, otherwise, you risk losing their attention almost immediately - humans have short attention spans!
Don't just list your current title, add some spice with a tagline. For example, "Writer" could become: "Content Writer, 4 years of experience writing excellent copy for news portals & top brands around the globe"
This is your opportunity to impress, take it.
6. Be Strategic About Your Skills Section.
Make sure your skills section is focused on achieving 2 main goals: including keywords that allow you to be more searchable in LinkedIn's algorithm, and highlighting the real skills you possess that show you're a unique talent.
To do this, delete any insignificant skills you may have listed - if they don't make an impact then they don't deserve to be there. Then, make sure you add specific skills that are sought after in the industry you'd like to be hired in.
Finally, make sure your most important skills are on top.
